The Start of Our Journey
Our OPAL journey began with a shared vision: to transform playtimes into opportunities where every child can explore, create, imagine and enjoy meaningful experiences with their friends.
We recognised that play is a vital part of childhood and an important opportunity for children to develop independence, confidence, resilience and social skills. By introducing the OPAL approach, we are working towards creating a more engaging, inclusive and exciting outdoor environment where children have greater choice and ownership over their play.
Through thoughtful changes to our playground spaces, the introduction of new resources and a focus on supporting high-quality play, we are developing an environment where children can take risks, solve problems, collaborate and have fun.
This is the beginning of our OPAL journey, and we are excited to see how our play spaces continue to grow and evolve alongside our children.
What is OPAL?
OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning and is a programme that helps schools improve the quality of their playtimes by placing play at the heart of children’s everyday experiences.
The OPAL approach is based on the belief that every child deserves access to high-quality play opportunities. It encourages children to be active, creative and imaginative while developing important life skills through self-directed play.
Rather than simply providing equipment for children to use, OPAL creates an environment where children can make choices, follow their interests and develop their own games and ideas.
Why Play Matters
Play is essential for children’s development. Through play, children learn how to communicate, cooperate, negotiate and manage challenges.

Our Play Environment
As part of our OPAL journey, we are continuing to develop our outdoor spaces to provide a wide range of play opportunities for all children.

We are introducing a variety of resources and play zones that allow children to use their creativity and adapt spaces to suit their ideas.
