The First Day in Reception
First Day of School
Starting school is a big and exciting milestone for both children and families. We aim to make your child’s first day as welcoming, calm and enjoyable as possible so that they feel happy and ready to begin their learning journey.
Getting Ready for the Day
Before your child’s first day, it can help to:
-
Talk positively about school and the fun things they will do there
-
Practise putting on their school uniform and coat
-
Encourage independence with simple tasks such as using the toilet, washing hands, and putting belongings in their bag
-
Make sure your child’s name is clearly labelled on all clothing, bags and water bottles
Please remember to bring:
-
A named water bottle
-
A school bag
-
Spare clothes (especially for younger children or nursery pupils)
-
Any medication your child may need, handed directly to staff
Arriving at School
On the first day, staff will be available to welcome children and families and help everyone settle in. Your child’s teacher and other staff members will guide them into the classroom and help them find their coat peg, tray or drawer for their belongings.
It is normal for some children to feel a little nervous when saying goodbye. Staff are experienced in supporting children through this and will help them settle quickly with activities and reassurance.
What Your Child Will Do
The first day is usually focused on helping children feel comfortable in their new environment. Children will:
-
Meet their teacher and classmates
-
Explore the classroom and learning areas
-
Learn simple routines such as where to put their belongings and how to line up
-
Take part in fun activities, stories and play
For younger children, much of the day will include play-based learning to help them build confidence and friendships.
Saying Goodbye
We understand that saying goodbye on the first day can feel emotional for both children and parents. A short, positive goodbye usually helps children settle much more quickly.
If children see that an adult is upset, or if the goodbye is drawn out for a long time, it can sometimes make it harder for them to separate and begin their day. For this reason, we recommend a quick drop-off, a smile and a reassuring goodbye, before leaving staff to support your child.
Our staff are very experienced in helping children settle and will comfort and distract them with activities, toys and new friends. In most cases, children settle within just a few minutes once they are in the classroom.
If your child remains upset for a longer period of time, we will contact you to let you know and discuss the best way to support them. In reality, this rarely happens, and children are usually happily engaged very soon after arrival.
End of the Day
At the end of the school day, staff will ensure children are safely handed back to parents or carers. This is also a good opportunity for a quick chat with the class teacher if needed.
Working Together
Starting school is a big step, and we understand that every child adjusts at their own pace. Our staff are here to support both children and families during this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to a member of the team.
We look forward to welcoming your child and helping them begin their school journey.
