British Values

Why We Teach British Values in School

At our school, we believe it’s important that every child understands not only their place in school, but also their place in modern Britain. That’s why we teach British Values – so children learn how to behave responsibly, respect others, and take part in society with confidence and kindness. This isn’t just about lessons in the classroom – it’s about helping children grow into thoughtful, respectful, and active citizens.

What Are the Basic British Values?

There are five key British Values that we focus on:

Democracy – learning how decisions are made, having a voice, and taking part in votes and school council activities.

The Rule of Law – understanding why rules matter, both in school and in society, and the importance of fair consequences.

Individual Liberty – encouraging children to make choices, express themselves, and learn about their rights and responsibilities.

Mutual Respect – valuing kindness, listening to others, and treating everyone fairly.

Tolerance of Different Faiths, Beliefs and Cultures – celebrating diversity, understanding other people’s lives and views, and showing respect for everyone.

These values help prepare our children for life in our school community and in wider society, fostering respect, understanding, and confidence.

How We Use Picture News Weekly

Every week, we use Picture News, a resource that brings current events into school in a way children can understand.

Each Picture News activity includes:

  • A child-friendly image from something happening in the world today

  • A thought-provoking question that encourages children to talk, think, and share their opinions

  • Links to British Values and opportunities to explore real-life issues in a respectful and age-appropriate way

We use Picture News weekly in assemblies and class discussions to help children:

  • Understand what’s happening around the world

  • Connect current events to British Values

  • Build confidence in speaking and listening

  • Respect different ideas and viewpoints

Picture News helps make British Values relevant and meaningful by linking them to real and engaging topics.

Here are some example topics we have covered this year:
